The restoration of Bricket Wood station, by the Bricket Wood Station Heritage Trust, has been recognised with a prestigious National Railway Heritage Award (NRHA); the highest honour available for the restoration of railway buildings and structures in the UK.
At a ceremony at the Mechant Taylors’ Hall in London on Wednesday 4th December, two of the Trust’s founding members Robert Yorke and Dave Horton stepped forward to receive the award in the ‘Operational Enhancement’ category, sponsored by Great Western Railway (GWR), with the award being presented by the Guest of Honour, Ptolemy Dean OBE, the architect, television presenter and current Surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey.
Commenting on the restoration, the NRHA judges noted that the work was of a, “uniformly high standard” and that the community space created was, “well used by local people as well as visitors”. The overall result was, “transformational”.
Bricket Wood was one of a number of projects recognised with an award, the full list of winners are detailed in the NRHA press release. The entire ceremony was recorded and can be viewed on Youtube: https://youtu.be/-13G0yYTnd0?si=3QTJW-JrewvLwUfj
For the Trust, Dave Horton noted that winning a National Railway Heritage Award had always been the aspiration, and this vision had finally paid off after 8 years of hard work by the Trust. It is the icing on the cake of what has been a great year for the Trust, having earlier won a Community Rail Award, a Parish Award, as well as being honoured with a plaque from the Railway Heritage Trust.
